Work and School

  • Aug. 18th, 2009 at 9:42 PM

I am currently working a long-term temp job, which is good. I was seriously afraid I would be out of work for a long time before finding even temp work.  My daughter started 2nd grade last Thursday and is VERY happy to be back in school. So things are starting to look slightly up.

FYI, she is selling the "Entertainment Book" coupon book for $30.00 for her school.  You don't have to buy the one for St. Louis, you can buy any city/state they offer and her school can still get the proceeds.  If you comment here with your e-mail address, I can get the link for you to buy online, or you can call me about it if you have my number and I can put in an order for you.  Thanks.

Job

  • Apr. 14th, 2009 at 8:26 PM

Kyraanne's post today made me realize that I should have posted something similar several months ago. My employer, Sara Lee, has announced that they are outsourcing most of their accounting and IT departments in the US and worldwide over the next couple of years.  Unfortunately, the US is first on the chopping block and my position will be officially eliminated as of August 2, 2009.  I started putting out resumes and applications at the beginning of the year.  I have been spending at least a little time on it every day, and hours on the weekends.  So far I am not getting any responses that aren't from Temp agencies.  While I have no objections to temping and have gotten a couple of really good jobs out of temping, I am not willing to give up my benefits and small severance package for a temp position.  So after my job officially ends, I will temp if I haven't gotten a permanent position before that.  But honestly, I am concerned about being unemployed in today's economy.  So If you know of something that you think I might be good for, please let me know.  I have been doing accounting for several years now and have my Associate's in Accounting and Business Management, but before that I did Admin Support work.  I am also willing to go in different directions than I have done before, as long as I am physically capable of doing it (no heavy lifting or standing/walking all day).  I am not filtering this. The announcement about the outsourcing was made months ago to the public, so it is no secret that any of this is happening. Any help I could get with the job hunt would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Healing and endurance progress

  • Mar. 30th, 2009 at 9:10 AM

I feel the need to brag on myself, and I hope you guys don’t mind. I went with my mom this weekend to two craft fairs, just like we planned. I walked around the first one with no break at all (it was small) Then we went out to Mid Rivers. I walked from one end of the mall to the other, on the top floor and then did it again on the bottom floor. I took lots of breaks, but I was still able to walk the next day. My healing foot is too swollen to put the good shoes on this morning, but I wasn’t hurting so bad yesterday or today, that I was bed ridden!!! I seriously feel like I am making progress, and might eventually be able to be a normal person again. :) Yeah!!!

Superstitious Behavior in Chickens

  • Mar. 11th, 2009 at 7:59 AM

Many years ago, BradHicks told me a story about a research project where chickens were kept in a cage with lots of props, bells, buttons, etcetera and a machine that dispensed food randomly. As time went on, the chickens noticed what they had been doing before they got their food and would do those things over and over again, to try to make more food come. Eventually they had elaborate dances they would each do as they added movement after movement with the bells, buttons and other props. None of these dances worked, as the machine that controlled the food was entirely random. The researchers drew parallels between this behavior and how humans created superstitious rituals as round nature and other things we have no control over. I am not sure of the source of this story, or even if it was a real research project. Knowing the source, it probably is a true college research study. I couldn’t find anything on the web about it, but I didn’t try very hard.

I am seeing this played out currently at work. Our IT department upgraded the main system that we work on about 2 weeks ago. Ever since then, the system has been incredibly slow in pulling up images of the invoices we need to key, and sometimes just refuses to do it at all, freezing our desktops up so that they have to be rebooted.  The IT department just keeps telling us that they are working on the issue. So all day, all around me I hear people giving suggestions on making it work faster. From “try not touching the keyboard when your pulling an image” to “you can’t have any other programs open and then it works” None of these suggestions actually work, and none of them are coming from anyone who has any idea what the technical details of the issue are. But all of the chickens keep coming up with superstitions to try to make it work. Don’t you love the human psyche?

Shoes

  • Mar. 1st, 2009 at 10:12 PM

I finally got my new shoes. I wanted to have them before the Convention, but the store didn't have them in my size in time. I have to say, I know they look weird, but they are the BEST shoes when it comes to relieving pain. I can walk in them, even on my newly healed ankle and it doesn't hurt. I can't say that about ANY other shoes right now. They are expensive, but since they have built in orthotics, insurance pays for part of it. This is what they look like. I got them from Z-Coil Shoes at http://www.springactionfootwear.com/. Z-CoiL® Pain Relief FootwearTM; 111 Clarkson Executive Park  On Clarkson Rd. between Clayton & Manchester; Ellisville (St. Louis) MO  63011; (636) 230-0990. I LOVE these shoes.  And they fit them to your feet while you are there.  I know they look weird, but anything that takes away that much pain, is worth looking a little weird to me.

Just an FYI

Many of you will be getting calls and/or e-mails over the next few weeks, as my daughter is a Daisy with the Girl Scouts and this is her first year selling Girl Scout Cookies. They will be $3.50 per box this year and we will get the forms a week from today. Thanks in advance for helping to make her first year successful.

Quick Update

  • Dec. 29th, 2008 at 12:06 PM

For any one that is interested, this is what my ankle looked like when I broke it

This is what it looks like now:

I am now allowed to walk on it without a cane or brace or anything, as long as I am very careful and it is nice out. As soon as it gets snowing or icy or anything, I am under strick orders to use the cane and brace again, but at least I get to walk without it most of the time.

My daughter had a great holiday, first at her father's house and then at my mom's before going to her dad's again for the weekend. He has her New Years Eve and I have her New Year's Day, so I am not sure what we are doing to celebrate the new year, yet. I have heard of 2 parties, so far, the one at the Celestial house, and the one at the Ungoth's parent's house. But since my SO has been busy trying to get his car to work, we haven't had a chance yet to talk about where or what we want to do.

If I don't see you sometime that night, Have a happy new year!!

Thanks

I actually got to go out on Saturday to Kukla's party. This was the first time I was able to go out and be social since I broke my ankle. I think we probably would have just turned around and came home if it weren't for several people at the party who came out and helped get me and my wheelchair up the steps and inside the house. I want to thank every one of you for making it possible for me to enjoy the party and be out with friends. Hopefully this will be over soon and I will be walking again. Thank you for making it a little easier on me.

Ankle Update

  • Oct. 21st, 2008 at 9:52 AM

I went to the doctor last night and I was cleared to put weight on my foot. So I started the day taking the walker to work instead of the wheelchair. I have been using the walker around the house without putting weight on the injured ankle, but I found out this morning that using it full time is entirely different. Not even half-way to my desk and I gave up and asked for my desk chair to be brought to me so that I could actually make it to my desk. Putting weight on the foot hurts, which I expected. But putting most of my weight on my good leg and my arms, hurts as well. By the time I got to my desk my arms, hip and most of my good leg were enjoying that burning feeling that comes when you put too much pressure on muscles that are not up for it. I knew getting myself to where I was walking again was going to take work, but I have to admit that I was not quite aware how much work. Add to this the fact that the doctor wants me to wear a shoe with support (he suggested a tennis shoe) and none of the shoes in the house can fit over my foot even when it has been up all night. And we have a difficult situation. I figure I am going to have to buy 2 different size pairs of shoes, so that the same shoe can fit both of my feet. And I will probably get a “rollator” which is a cross between a wheelchair and a walker. That way I can sit down when I need to. Oh – and sure enough the incision got infected as soon as I started taking my Enbrel again, so now I am on anti-biotics and such to get rid of that. Don’t you want to be me?

Ankle Update

  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 10:30 AM

I went in to the doctor yesterday and they took the cast off and removed the stitches. I am now allowed to touch my whole foot to the floor, but not to put any weight on it. I have exercises I am to do to start gaining back some mobility, but he is not even thinking about letting me put weight on it until he sees how the X-rays look on my next appointment on October 20th. Then he is hoping to be able to start me on small amounts of weight at a time, but I will still be using the wheelchair or walker for a while even at that point. On the up side, the swelling in my ankle has gone down significantly since I got the cast off. Unfortunately, I may not be walking on my own until Thanksgiving.

Ankle

  • Sep. 24th, 2008 at 8:38 PM

Well, I had to have surgery on the ankle. The small leg bone (tibia, I think)broke straight through and then made the entire ankle shift over. So they had to put a plate on the bone to hold it together and shift the ankle back to it can heal. They said I have a lot of tendon and ligament damage, as well. I am supposed to keep the leg elevated and on ice for the next 48 hours. Then I can start using a walker or wheel chair to get around. I am allowed to touch my toes to the floor on the injured leg, for balance, but NO pressure what-so-ever. I have spent the last 3 days with my daughter at my mother's house. I am home tonight, but my daughter is still at Grandmas until Friday. Wish me luck.

Life Strikes Again

  • Sep. 21st, 2008 at 11:18 AM

So I was walking back out to my car after dropping my daughter off at day care before work on Friday when I stepped on one of those curbs they put at the end of a parking space. My foot slipped off and my whole body fell down right on top of my ankle. After almost 6 hours in the ER, they tell me I broke my ankle. I won't know much more than that until I see an Orthodedic Surguen on Monday. Until then, at least I will be moving in with my mom, so I don't have to deal with stairs. I will post with more info. when I can.

So it dawned on me the other day that I am probably the only person who has a living breathing shoe fairy.  I mean it.  My mother has foot problems so she buys shoes, wears them for an hour or two and if she doesn't like them, leaves them on my doorstep.  This means I come home to brand new shoes on my door step with no warning and no note or anything.  I LIKE having a shoe fairy.  It is a cool thing.

I have finally found a home for the wonderful dog that is just too much for me.  Je2nyo and AlienZen have decided to take my almost 2 year old Pomeranian.  i have been looking for a home for him for a while and I am very pleased to have found one that will be SO good to him.  He loves their yard and they seem to really like him.  At the same time, though, I am sad and dissappointed that I am not able to provide him with what he needs.  I will miss him.  It looks like we will be getting a kitten to replace him.  I never should have made that promise to my daughter, but <sigh> it will be nice to have a youngster in the house, and I KNOW I can take care of kittens. :)  I jsut don't know when we will get one.

Pirate Fest starts this weekend, so I will be occupied for the next 3 weekends straight, since I am on Merchant Committee.  This is the first time that I have volunteered for the fair since my Ex and I split up.  I hope I am up to it physically.  I just have to remember to take it slow and easy.

My poor daughter...

This would be why I wasn’t at work yesterday. I have to admit that she was outside on the side walk and I was inside, so I didn’t see it happen. She said she was skipping on the grass and fell on the sidewalk, so I think she probably tripped when the grass met up with the side walk. We were in the ER until almost midnight on Sunday night and she stayed home with me yesterday. They did a CT scan and there is no brain damage or skull injury. It is all on the outside in the soft tissue, so it should heal fine, in time. She is scared to look at her nose in the mirror and is afraid the kids at school won’t like her because she “isn’t pretty anymore”. Last night, she had a friend come over to play and the one of the first things she said was “I am sorry that happened to your face, you were so pretty before…” Her mom was not happy and told both of them she was still pretty and that the sores would heal and she would look just the same as before. Keep your fingers crossed for us that it heals up without scarring.

New RA Doctor

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 9:01 AM

Well, I am seeing a new RA doctor and actually feeling better than I have in a long time.  Yes, he confirmed that I have RA and FMS, but he is also thinking I have Carpal Tunnel, too.  Not that there is anything they can do about the Carpal Tunnel, it is from the swelling from the RA, so all we can do is try to get that under control, and get my sleep ironed out.  But I should be in better shape for Pirate Fest than I have been in a while. I am actually able to be on my feet for almost an hour without hurting too much, and when I sit down, the pain GOES AWAY - before it just didn't get worse. Also, this doctor spent 45 minutes talking to me during the first appointment and 30 during the second.  My old RA doctor never spend more than 7 minutes with me at a time.  Yeah for GOOD doctors!!

LJ Take 2

  • Jul. 29th, 2008 at 11:33 AM

Well, since I no longer have access to the e-mail that I set up the other LJ with, and I can't remember the password, I can't get into it. SO I am trying again.  Maybe I will keep this one more up to date.
